Is the type of training you’re doing hindering your success?

We all know how important training is in order to become successful.  The more advanced you are in your sport, the more you train.  In Hockey and Figure Skating, training doesn’t just involve on ice practice and lessons.  There is so much more to it than that and there are so many options out there.  Off-Ice of course is a must and Cross Training can be loads of fun.  However, the wrong addition to your training can also hurt you, especially when it’s during the wrong time of the season.  Season Planning, also known as as Periodization is usually done by the Head Coach or another professional working with the team.  Once you hit a certain level in your sport, this is an absolute must in order to reach Peak Performance.  This will will involve every aspect of your life, especially your training intensity and type of training you do at any particular time of the year.  Becoming a successful athlete takes a lot of dedication and sacrifice, but with the right type of training and a supportive coaching team that guides you it can be a rewarding journey.

Great first steps towards a successful plan:

  • Identify all your competition/game dates for the season.
  • Plan out all your personal events that may cause you to miss training.
  • Don’t forget to build breaks into your schedule to avoid overtraining and burnout that can lead to injury.
